REFLECTION ON TODAY'S READINGS

Peter explained to the people that every good deed and all restoration to health are accomplished in the name of Christ Jesus, the Nazarene, through whom all are saved.

Believers are the dearly beloved children of God who do not yet know what shall come to light.  When it does come to light, believers will be like God.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd who knows the sheep.  The good shepherd not only loves and protects the sheep but also sacrifices life and limb for them.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Look for opportunities not guarantees.

Dear Parishioners:

Next Saturday two men from our parish will make a most wonderful commitment to serve the Lord and His Church.  For the past five years Fred Mauser and Ed Kernan have been quietly preparing to become permanent deacons in the Catholic Church.  These years of preparation have included hours of theology classes, study, prayer and formation. I am delighted to announce that Cardinal Keeler has now called them to the Order of Deacon and will ordain them on Saturday, May 17th, at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore. Then on Sunday they will serve as deacons for the first time at our parish.  Ed will celebrate and preach at the 8:00am Mass and Fred will do the same at the 9:30am Mass.

Obviously this gives us great cause for joy and celebration.  Our parish has truly been blessed by these men and now they will be an even greater blessing for the church in their new role as deacons.  As yet the Cardinal has not given them their parish assignments.  However, since both these men are blessed with many gifts and talents and above all a great faith in the Lord and a great love for the Catholic Church, they will be of wonderful service to any parish to which they are assigned.

In the name of our whole parish community, I extend to both Ed and Fred our sincere and heartfelt congratulations.  And I extend our deepest gratitude to them for their willingness to serve the Lord as deacons.  May God richly bless them as they begin their new ministries.

                                                                                                                        Msgr. Luca

P.S.  Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers of our parish.  Thank you so very much for all the love and care you give throughout the whole year.  May God Bless all our mothers—you’re the greatest!!

RESPECT LIFE: “If it is permissible to kill the unborn human being for convenience, it surely is permissible to kill those who are thought soon to die for the same reason.  It is inevitable that many who are not in danger of imminent death will be killed to relieve their families of burdens.  Convenience is becoming the theme of our culture. Humans tend to be inconvenient at both ends of their lives.” Robert H. Bork, Inconvenient Lives, FIRST THINGS, 12/96. The Respect for Life Committee is a voice for life.  Everyone is welcome! Join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 7pm in the Parish Office Meeting Room.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION: VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Vacation Bible School registration has begun!  Join us in learning about the Fruit of the Spirit!  During the week of July 7-11 we will learn to GROW LOVE, SPROUT JOY, PLANT PEACE, PRODUCE PATIENCE & PICK KINDNESS.  Vacation Bible School is open to all children who are going to be 4 years old by Sept 1, 2003 through 5th grade in the Fall of 2003.  Registration forms were handed out through the Religious Education Program, St. Louis School and the Wee Praise program.  Additional forms are available on the table outside the religious education office.  We need youth and adult volunteer helpers, too!  Whether you are entering 6th grade or long ago finished college, please consider spending time sharing your faith with the children of the parish.  Questions, contact the Religious Ed Office at 410-531-6688 or Moira Monk at 410-531-6752.

WE ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS: During the month of April and May, about 260 of our children will share in an event of great joy for both them and our entire Catholic community. They will receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. They and their families have been preparing for the celebration of this Sacrament for some time now. They have learned how sacred and precious the gift of the Eucharist is and what it means to share that gift with others.  Our St. Louis family recognizes what a gift these children are to us and we ask for your prayers as we bring these two great gifts together…

Blessing for our First Communicants

Jesus Christ, Bread of Life, travel beside these children as they take their first steps to your table.  Help them to recognize you in the words of Holy Scripture, in the Blessed Sacrament, in your people, and in themselves.  Draw these children close to you so they may radiate your love to others.  Amen.

First Communion Rehearsal Dates

We would like to remind our First Communion families of the dates and times for rehearsals. It is very important that the First Communicant and at least one parent attend the rehearsal. Those students who will be participating in the liturgy have been notified of an additional rehearsal. Please call the Office of Religious Education at (410) 531-6688 if you have any questions.

Communion Date   Time                    Rehearsal Date    Time

May 17                   9:30am                    May 15                   4:30pm

May 17                   11:30am                  May 15                   6:30pm

Our First Holy Communion Quilt will be finished and can be viewed in the Religious Education Office the week after Easter. At the Last Supper, not only did Jesus bless us with the priceless gift of His Body and Blood, He also gave us… “…a new commandment… love one another as I have loved you… This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (John 13: 34-35)

We pray that our children will one-day come to truly understand that the Eucharist offers us such a powerful & profound gift that it can never be returned... it can only be graciously received. As Catholics, we know that we have received God’s gift if we allow it to flow through us into others. Thus gratitude & service are one movement of God’s presence to us. In an effort to help our First Communicants understand that God gathers each of us together to eat and drink at the table of the Lord, so that we may become the one, true body of Christ for the world… we decided to use the symbolism of a warm, cozy, lovingly made quilt. Their quilt will be carried forward with the bread & wine as they prepare our table for their very first Holy Communion. We have also decided to give all the opportunity to purchase $1.00 raffle tickets for a chance to own & cherish this very special quilt forever. The money that we raise from the sale of these quilt tickets will be given as a gift of love from our First Communicants to the children of St. John the Evangelist in Gonaives, Haiti, our ‘sister parish’. This is one small way our First Communicants will share their love & show that they are Christ’s disciples. If you would like to support our effort, $1.00 raffle tickets can be purchased through the Religious Education Office now through May 22. For more information, please call (410) 531-6688.

YOUTH COORDINATOR’S

COMMENTS

Last week, I traveled to Gettysburg.  I went to college near there (Go MSM!) and hadn’t been to the battlefields in awhile so I decided to start early and visit the town and military park.  While I was hiking in the woods and at all of the monuments, I was struck by a couple of things.  I was first aware of the great death and violence of the place and the haunted atmosphere that exists there.  Many had died on those fields, some even our own ancestors.  I imagined neighbors and families fighting and killing each other, all willing to die for “the cause.”  I also thought of how ordinary people like you and me lost their lives and how each cemetery plot represented whole families and communities…

My third reflection came as I hiked to the top of Little Round Top and Devil’s Den, the site of much bloodshed, sniper fire, hand to hand combat.  I thought simply, “Have we really learned from this awful battle?”  Are we humans destined to repeat ourselves over and over again?  We see so much violence and gore on TV and in the news that it seems surreal.  And yet, our own soldiers are now, today, risking their lives in Iraq.  Innocent Iraqi people are really dying today and thousands upon thousands have died in the past month.  I pray for two things now and, God, if my prayer is off base, help me to see differently:

I pray that peace come to the Middle East, that no more are killed in this conflict in Iraq.  I also pray that we turn to Jesus, the Ultimate Peacemaker, asking Him to show us the way of peace, possibly a different way than we have become accustomed over our history.  AMEN.
