REFLECTION ON TODAY'S READINGS

Paul and Barnabas proclaimed the Good News in Derbe, Lystra, Antioch, Pisidia, Pamphylia and Attalia.  They made numerous disciples and encouraged them to persevere in the faith.

John saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth were gone. Now a new Jerusalem, the holy city, came down from God in heaven, beautiful as a bride.  The One on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

After Judas left, Jesus said to the others, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: The curve of a mother’s smile can set a lot of things straight.

Dear Parishioners:

There is a beautiful old story of how God spent hours creating our first mother in the Garden of Eden.  He was working overtime on the sixth day and an angel asked Him why He was taking so much time to make a woman.  God said: “She is to become the mother of all mankind. So she should have six pair of hands, five of them invisible.  She should have three pair of eyes, one visible pair in the front, the second and the third invisible pair at the back and at the sides of her head.  Finally she should have a large and elastic heart.”

The angel said: “I can guess why a mom should have six pair of hands and a large heart, but why three pairs of eyes?”  God said: “One pair of invisible x-ray eyes at the sides to see through closed doors when she asks "What are you kids doing?"  and she already knows what is going on inside.  The second invisible pair at the back of her head to see what she is not supposed to see, but has to know as a responsible mother.  And of course, the third pair of normal eyes in the front that can look at a child when he makes a mistake and say without uttering a word: “Dear, I understand you, I love you.”

“Any other specification?” the angel asked.  God said: “She should be able to run on black coffee and leftovers.  She should have a kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair.  She should be able to heal herself when she is sick.  She should feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger, and finally she should have eyes that shed tears of joy and pride, tears of sadness, tears of disappointment and tears of old age loneliness.”

Is this not the picture of a loving mother?  On this day when we honor our mothers and pray in thanksgiving to God for them whether they be living or deceased, I sincerely extend to all our mothers a heartfelt Happy Mothers Day. May God bless you today and always for all the many expressions of love you give your children all year long.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION

Religious Education 2004-2005

Re-Registrations and New Registrations

This year we will not be sending out re-registration packets to the families of our 2003-2004 families.  Instead, we will be offering all families, new and returning, the opportunity to go online and download and print out the registration.  www.stlouisparish.org/reled

Effective May 1, 2004 through July 1, 2004, we will have a downloadable and printable Religious Education registration form (one for re-registrations from 2003-04 and one for new registrations) for the 2004-05 school year.  You will have the ability to print the registration form, complete it, and send the registration with your full payment to the Religious Education Office by July 1st.  What is the advantage of doing this?  Because this will save us the time and money of printing and mailing out the re-registration packet, we will give you a $25 discount per child ($75 maximum) off our 2004-05 tuition rate of $125.00 per child, $375.00 family maximum.  BUT YOU MUST HAVE THE FORM AND PAYMENT INTO OUR OFFICE BY JULY 1st . Remember:  we must receive it by July 1st, not postmarked by July 1st.  This method of registration is open to both new and returning families to religious education.  So if you will be new to the program in 2004-05, and you are registered in St. Louis Parish, go to the website so you can take advantage of our “early bird special.”

Beginning July 2nd, you will no longer be able to download and printout the registration/re-registration form. The forms will then be available in the back of the church and in the Religious Education Office after that date.  The tuition rate will be $125 per child, $375 maximum, our regular 2004-05 tuition rate.

If you have any questions, give the Religious Education Office a call at 410-531-6688 (K-5 and family) or the Youth Office a call at 410-531-6668 (grades 6-10).

Interested in Wee Praise?  Coming soon will be information regarding the same type of internet downloadable and printable registration form for 2004-2005.  Please keep checking the bulletin for more information!!!

WE ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS

During the month of May, about 230 of our children will share in an event of great joy for both them and our entire Catholic community. They will receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. They and their families have been preparing for the celebration of this Sacrament for some time now.

They have learned how sacred and precious the gift of the Eucharist is and what it means to share that gift with others. Our St. Louis family recognizes what a gift these children are to us and we ask for your prayers as we bring these two great gifts together…

Blessing for our First Communicants

Jesus Christ, Bread of Life, travel beside these children as they take their first steps to your table.  Help them to recognize you in the words of Holy Scripture, in the Blessed Sacrament,

in your people, and in themselves. Draw these children close to you so they may radiate your love to others.  Amen.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Vacation Bible School registration has begun.  Are you all set to join us every morning July 12-16, 2004 ?   Don’t miss the faith filled fun as we sing, create, learn, munch and play together.  If you are entering pre-K (4’s) through 5th grade, this is the place for you.  Registration forms are available in the table outside the religious education office.  May 9 is our registration deadline so please don’t delay and send your form in today.  If you have any questions, call the religious education office (410) 531-6688 or Mrs. Moira Monk at (410) 531-6752.

Wondering what to do in the heat of July? Come stay cool with VBS! VOLUNTEERS WE NEED YOU!  Vacation Bible School needs your help this July ! Come share your faith and have a lot of fun.  Anyone entering 6th grade in the fall through our retired parishioners are needed to help us run a fun and safe camp.  If you are interested, youth volunteer forms are available on a table outside the religious education office.  Adult volunteers should call Mrs. Moira Monk at (410) 531-6752

to express their interest.

A FREE nursery is available for the children of adult volunteers who are too young to attend our VBS.

CALL NOW!  Don’t miss out on this fantastic experience.

First Communion Rehearsal Dates: We would like to remind our First Communion families of the dates and times for rehearsals. It is very important that the First Communicant and at least one parent attend the rehearsal. Those students who will be participating in the liturgy will be notified of an additional rehearsal. Please call the Office of Religious Education at (410) 531-6688 if you have questions.

Communion Date   Time                    Rehearsal Date    Time

May 15                   9:30am                    May 13                   4:30pm

May 15                   11:30am                  May 13                   6:30pm

OUR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION QUILT IS FINISHED! Please feel free to stop by the Religious Education Office and take a sneak peak at it. At the Last Supper, not only did Jesus bless us with the priceless gift of His Body and Blood, He also gave us…

“…a new commandment… love one another as I have loved you… This is how all will know that you are my disciples,  if you have love for one another.”  John 13: 34-35)

We pray that our children will one-day come to truly understand that the Eucharist offers us such a powerful & profound gift that it can never be returned... it can only be graciously received. As Catholics, we know that we have received God’s gift if we allow it to flow through us into others. Thus gratitude & service are one movement of God’s presence to us. In an effort to help our First Communicants understand that God gathers each of us together to eat and drink at the table of the Lord, so that we may become the one, true body of Christ for the world… we decided to use the symbolism of a warm, cozy, lovingly made quilt. Their quilt will be carried forward with the bread & wine as they prepare our table for their very first Holy Communion. We have also decided to give all the opportunity to purchase $1.00 raffle tickets for a chance to own & cherish this very special quilt forever. The money that we raise from the sale of these quilt tickets will be given as a gift of love from our First Communicants to the children of St. John the Evangelist in Gonaives, Haiti, our ‘sister parish’. This is one small way our First Communicants will share their love & show that they are Christ’s disciples. If you would like to support our effort, $1.00 raffle tickets can be purchased through the Religious Education Office now through May 22. For more information, please call (410) 531-6688.

YOUTH COORDINATOR’S COMMENTS

Hiking once again, this time off Rte 40 in Hollifield, I found myself coming upon four consecutive hills. My personal theory is to run up each hill I find…I want to get to the top as quickly as I can so I am not stuck halfway through with no breath left!  As I rested after the last hill, I took time to write about what it means to be breathless.  Breathing is something we don’t really think about until we are ‘out of it’ or, better still, having trouble with it.  Are we really ever really ‘out of breath?’ (until we die, that is!)

Then, it hit me…The breath of God, the Holy Spirit, is there for the asking.  Even when we die, the Holy Spirit leads us home, guiding us to everlasting life. I am not just thinking about a physical death, but all of the emotional and spiritual ones we go through in our lives.  We can feel spiritually breathless when we sin in a way we feel that God will never forgive us or when we have something happen to us that knocks our faith around.  We can feel emotionally out of breath when we hurt someone or someone hurts us.  And yet, the Holy Spirit is still with us, calling us back, giving us strength and peace and new breath for more valleys and hills. PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEGUN THEIR PREPARATIONS FOR CONFIRMATION, ASKING GOD TO SEND THE BREATH OF HIS SPIRIT TO BE WITH THEM. I will be praying for you and them!
