Roles that occur DURING the week of VBS:
(Some individuals may be interested in volunteering the week of VBS, and helping in a volunteer role that lends a hand prior to VBS – see below for the behind the scenes roles)

Group Leader/Guide:  A Leader (generally an adult) is responsible for a group of approximately 12 children (Pre-K to 5th grade) throughout the week of VBS.  The group will gather in the morning for our opening session, then move throughout the day to the fun-filled VBS stations – games, crafts, kid-vid, snack, bible lessons & adventures.  Throughout the day, the Leader will make sure the children are safely chaperoned and accounted for.  The Leader will also assist the children during VBS stations, and help them learn the important Godly points for the day.  It is highly suggested to prepare a few short filler activities during down time.  A VBS training is required.    Virtus Certification is required.

Youth Group Guide:  A Group Guide (usually a youth volunteer) helps the Group Leader to fulfill the responsibilities outlined for the Group Leader.  The Guide role is very important – cooperating with the Leader, assisting and engaging the campers throughout the day, safely chaperoning the campers from throughout the day and serving as a positive role model help make this role invaluable. A VBS training is required.  Guides 14 – 17 are required to be STAND Certified.   A VBS training is required.

Station Leaders/Station Co-Leaders:  We have 6 stations: Crafts, Snack, Bible Lessons, Bible Adventures, Kid Vid and Games.  Adult positon. Each station leader/team will prepare the activity for the day.  This will include securing the needed supplies for each day, mapping out an organized activity plan, prepping and preparing the items needed in your station.  Creating and decorating your area on set-up day, breaking down your area on last day.  A VBS training is required.  Virtus Certification is required.

Youth Station Assistants:  They help the adult Station Leaders to fulfill the responsibilities outlined for the Station Leader.  The Assistant’s role is very important – cooperating with the Leader, assisting the campers with the activity, engaging the campers, helping the Leader set up/clean up the station and serving as a positive role model help make this role crucial to producing a great station activity for our campers.  A VBS training is required.  Assistants 14 – 17 are required to be STAND Certified.

Music/Drama Team:  This team is comprised of adult and youth volunteers who will lead in the large group opening and closing gatherings.  We need people who are energetic, and excited to lead in front of a group.  Those in this role will help lead songs, teach motions to song and potentially act out short kits.  This role involves every day of VBS as well as a few potential rehearsals prior to VBS week. A VBS training is required.  Virtus Certification is required for adults, and STAND Certification for youth 14 to 17.

First Aid:  We have a nurse/doctor/PA/NP on staff during the week of VBS to handle first aide issues that may arise.  A meeting with the Director prior to VBS is required to review supplies, allergies, etc.  If possible, our desire would be for the first aid team to organize, and order any supplies needed.  During down time, we may ask for assistance with small office tasks.  Virtus Certification is required.

Nursery Team:  This role is made up of adult and youth helpers that have an interest in carrying for our littlest campers.  This role involves keeping our little ones safe and sound, and organizing and carrying out age appropriate activities.  Ages range from infants to 3 years of age.  The nursery numbers and ages vary based on the needs of our full time adult volunteers.  Our desire is for your team to set-up the nursery, the weekend prior to VBS.  A VBS training is required.  Virtus Certification is required for adults, and STAND Certification for youth 14 to 17.

Office Help/Floater:  Like to be on the move, flexible, and can switch gears on a dime? Then you may want to consider this role.  This role includes tasks to keep VBS running smoothly, support the office with daily tasks, assist wherever needed, or substitute in another role in the event of an emergency.  This is usually limited to 1 adult and 1 youth.  A VBS training is required.  Virtus Certification is required for adults, and STAND Certification for youth 14 to 17.

Youth Ministry Assistant:  A Youth Ministry Assistant is a role for an adult/college age student.  In this role, you will assist the Youth ministry team in preparing, organizing and carrying out fun faith-filled lessons for our youth volunteers.  All youth volunteers have a break out session during the course of the VBS day.  During this break out session our youth get an opportunity to hear God’s Word through fun activities, games, and discussion.  The age group for youth volunteers in 6th through 12th grade.   A VBS training is required.  Virtus Certification is required.

Service Project Team:  We need an individual or small group of individuals to be in charge of our VBS service project.  Great role for an adult/college age student/ high school junior or senior.  This role is an exciting one!  Every summer, VBS supports an organization that has a need for material goods.  We collect those gifts every morning during our opening gathering.  This role would include helping to make contact with an organization, planning and organizing the collection and (possibly) delivery of the material goods.  A meeting with the Director is required.  Virtus Certification required for adults, and STAND Certification for youth 14 to 17.

Behind the Scenes Roles, volunteer opportunities that occur PRIOR to the week of VBS:

Prep Crew: Aren’t free the week of VBS, but want to still help.  Prep encompass tasks big and small that support VBS before the actual event. These days/projects will occur throughout the year and be announced through our website and email.  Although the jobs may sometimes involve specific skills, most involve sorting, cutting, counting, prepping and organizing.  If you sign up for our Prep Crew, you will be invited to help set-up weekend as well.  If you have a specific skills such as building, give us a call.  Email tschuessler@stlouisparish.org to be added to our list email list.

Set-up Team:  VBS setup will occur in shifts the Saturday & Sunday before VBS.  A sign-up genius will be sent to all those registered to volunteer the week of VBS.  Many hands, make light work.  If you cannot help the week of VBS, but are interested in helping with set-up before the VBS begins, email tschuessler@stlouisparish.org to be added to our email list.

Clean-up Team:  VBS breakdown occurs from 1 to 4 on the last Friday of VBS.  A sign-up genius will be sent to all those registered to volunteer the week of VBS.  Many hands, make light work.  If you cannot help the week of VBS, but are interested in helping us to clean-up the building, email tschuessler@stlouisparish.org to be added to our list email list.

Decorating Team:  Have a skill for designing and decorating!  This is an area where we can use help.  Our goal is to transform our spaces to reflect our theme.  This team will help create, design and decorate our VBS spaces.  Transformation of the VBS spaces is generally occurs the Saturday and Sunday prior to VBS.    This team will work with the director, and co-director.  Email tschuessler@stlouisparish.org to be added to our list email list.

Construction Team:  Have a knack for building things!  We could use your help.  This team will help create and build indoor/outdoor props or sets.  This team will work with the director, co-director, and station leaders to plan, organize and build set pieces.   Transformation of the VBS spaces is generally occurs the Saturday and Sunday prior to VBS.  Email tschuessler@stlouisparish.org to be added to our list email list.
